Maui County winter storm update as of 3 p.m. February 1, 2025

STORM UPDATE

The weakening cold front pushed through the Big Island today, according to National Weather Service in Honolulu. Shallow bands of showers will favor more windward exposures and mauka slopes through the middle of next week. The severe winter storm impacted Maui County Jan. 30 to 31, 2025, bringing heavy rains, high winds, flooding and thunder, which caused significant damage. No injuries or fatalities were reported.

WATER

  • Restoration of water service after main line break in Hāpapa Gulch in Kula is estimated for 8 p.m. today.
  • If DWS customers in Upper Kula did not lose water service during the storm Jan. 30 to 31, 2025, your water remains unaffected. However, if you reside in or near the affected areas and experienced a service outage or low pressure, you are advised to boil your water until further notice.
  • Affected areas are under boil water notice until tests are completed and DWS lifts the notice.
  • Upper Kula affected areas are Ihe Place to Kanaio Road, Lower Kula Road, ʻIoʻio Place and Upper Nāʻalae Road (includes all sides of the road).
  • Potable water tankers are at Copp Road and Kula Highway; Kula Community Center; Ching store.

COUNTY FACILITIES AND SERVICES

  • Waiehu Golf Course reopened today.
  • Remaining County of Maui playing fields and stadiums remain closed until assessments are made.
  • All County recycling centers and landfills were reopened today for normal hours.
  • All County offices are scheduled to reopen Monday.

COUNTY ROADWAYS

  • Nuʻu crossing and Pahihi crossing on Piʻilani Highway was passable as of 1 p.m. today. Cleanup for smaller debris continues on Piʻilani Highway throughout the weekend.
  • Work continues with multiple contractors and County Highways crews to clear debris off roads in South Maui.
  • South Kīhei Road will remain closed to the general public from North Kīhei to Uwapo roads and from Ohukai Road to Namauʻu Place. These areas are open to residential traffic only.

COUNTY RESPONSE

MEMA is working with local and state partners to assess damages from the storm. Residents and businesses impacted by the storm can submit damage reports to MEMA online through the following link: https://crisistrack.juvare.com/public/mauiHI/request.html. Mayor Richard Bissen signed an emergency proclamation Thursday ahead of the storm, which gives the County the legal authority to mobilize resources, activate emergency plans and streamline processes to respond quickly and effectively.
