Weaknesses after

One of Lahaina's weaknesses after the fires were the flow of traffic and rescue support.

We couldn't get enough short-term rental property owners to rent their properties to fire victims.

I can't characterize that as anything but greed. Prices (rent, food, etc) seem to be going up well beyond inflation, so working folks won't be able to live in West Maui.

Hating tourists is driving them away.

Hurting our tax collections. Scaring people about taking over their properties. From the Governor to the Mayor to others. Like it or not tourism is the business Hawaii is in. We want to attract kind, gentle and high paying tourists of course. But no one will work the fields for $1/hr so agriculture en-mass is impossible today.

Way too much red tape and lack of respect for locals input and available housing for them. Lack of accountability of those entities responsible for the fire.

Weaknesses after

Total lack of understanding of the emergency management process for an isolated island community.

After Hurricane Iwa and Iniki, there should have been enough learned there to respond better. Still no talk of additional Police, Fire Or Ambulance services for the west side which haven't been addressed since Napili Station was built decades ago. Thousands of timeshare rooms added since then.

Goverment bureaucracy. Typical Hawaii red tape.

The homeless people living in the park from Canoe beach to Wahikuli beaches. Most of the people living there were homeless before the fire. Some came over from Oahu to take advantage of the free services. They are taking over some of the bathrooms and you can't use them. They fight with each other. Disturb people that are trying to enjoy the park.

Cleanup could easily be accelerated. Permitting process could be expanded. Financing should be made available.

I think a lot of the billionaires that have made Maui home in the last ten years should start an advocacy and redevelopment bank for local people and businesses. FEMA and Local Government and inadequate insurance settlement are not going to restart Lahaina.

Lack of permanent housing for all the displaced family

Slow clean up..they should rent or buy more heavy equipments to use for the debris removal and expedite the processing of the permit so everybody can rebuild as soon as possible..For the temporary housing they should do that right away after the fire so nobody left the island..

After the fire Lahaina’s weaknesses are not taking care of displaced residents, homeless in tents, no medical care,

no pool/skatepark, parks not maintained, residents unsure if will be able to rebuild, eminent domain threat, uncertainty for renters and homeowners, changes to kahana snd Napili snd kapslua, diviseness and lack of financial support for affected people snd rebuilding costs.

Weakness exists in denial.

Denial per accountability for actions taken (blocking Honopiilani by CvcCntr by MPD going North/NO DOWNED POWER LINES) Trying to put blame on our MFD! Denial per HECO's power lines flipping off weak wobbly poles in strong winds which we all saw LIVE as it was cell phone filmed 8/8/24. The mayor NEVER disclosing his whereabouts, why? Denial/secrecy is weakness.

Lack of affordable housing residents can buy as first time homeowners.

Lack of communication from our mayor. The county, state and FEMA should have had temporary housing up months ago-not start 7 months after. Slow cleanup, No plan for how Lahaina is going to be rebuilt. Poor messaging from the governor blaming the lack of housing on STR owners weakened tourism, so small businesses suffer

Still no justice of the missing from before the fire took place.

3 dozen missing men who share the same 14 characteristics. The work of a serial killer. The families are treated like they are less than dirt. Their lives don’t matter. Because greed and money rule on Maui. Human lives are easily disposable. Who cares if they are fathers, husbands, sons. Lahaina is a sick place where people sell out

No one is listening to each other. POOR LEADERSHIP!

Leaders like Tamara Paltin that are using the tragedy to push an agenda. Every time something comes out it is a conspiracy. We are not getting anywhere because no one is listening. We need a plan, we need it soon. People need to go home. Insurance will run out. People won't be able to hang on much longer.

Too many homeless people being attracted by Salavation Army and poorly managed beach parks.

No enforcement of illegal vacation rentals. Too much commercialism on beaches. ie: luaus and restaurants spilling over to the beach, surf lessons, kayaks, photography. Too much tourism. No community. Too many transients, tourists, homeless, as a result of poor community planning and lack of enforcement

Reimagining Lahaina is ruining Lahaina

The lack of our government getting people back into their homes and businesses as quickly as possible. Eminent domainIng our properties. Reimagining Lahaina is taking peoples properties away. Reimagining Lahaina is making it so people cannot hang on to get back to Lahaina. Reimagining Lahaina is making people leave Hawaii.

The outcry against tourists and tourism since the fire is sad.

My business isn't directly related to tourists but we all benefit from the dollars they bring. If we are unfriendly and unwilling to bring them back, we will be in poverty forever.

Residential areas should be rebuilt with state of the art utilities and roadways widened for emergency vehicle access.

Permitting for rebuilding should be steamlined to allow for speedy rebuilding once infrastructure is back in place. Consultants to work with community on establishing a memorial park and secure funds to purchase property for this pedestrial park in the historic district.

1. There's no transparency of where money is going or has gone.

2. no clear plan or timeline of when rebuilding can begin, when & where displaced residents are moving & no communication of these things to the public or those affected. 3. Experts should be hired, we shouldn’t rely on or even allow the politicians w/zero experience to make decisions for us. 4. People need certainty & they have none

There is going to be a tremendous need for adequate monies community members to rebuild.

Rebuilding is going to be expensive and the money will not be there for many. County gov't will be challenged for the community acceptance of a different town design plan and require builders to follow modern accepted building codes that will benefit the residents long term. Also, the trust in Gov't is absent.

Hawaii is going to have to make tough choices and so far the leadership has been anemic. I see victims everyday with mental heath issues they didn’t have prior to the fire. Letting it become a playground for the wealthy and losing the potential for future enjoyment of the area, history and views for all!
